What all do I need
Posted: Sun Aug 26, 2007 4:46:03 PM

I have a Ford F250 diesel with a 42 foot car trailer ( hauls 3or4 cars) that I run tn,ga,al and fl in. I'm wanting to start hauling for car lots in the area and run about a 300 radius but I'm not sure what I'm required to have. I have a class A cdl with all endorsements since I have driven a semi for the past 10 years, but I'm not familiar with the laws on this type of unit, thanks for the info

To haul across state lines for hire your going to need apportioned license plates, a Motor Carrier permit, USDOT number, possibly a GA DOT number? If you plan on going over 26,001 gvw you'll also need a IFTA license and stickers for each truck. And if you plan on having drivers for these trucks you'll probably need workers compensation insurance (I'm not sure on GA employment laws?). You'll also need to be enrolled in a random drug testing program, have a drug policy in place, and if you have drivers you must have someone in your company trained to spot drug use.  I' know it sounds like alot but it's not as difficult as it sounds. When you go from one truck driving it yourself to two or three with employees it sure opens up a can of worms. And if your going to do all this just to haul cars you'll need plenty of connections because a getting your cars off a load board won't be enough to support this business all year long. In my oppinion if your going to get into this business you need to be versital. Don't just set up to haul cars, mix it up and be set up for you can haul freight as well. Good Luck.
