Tearing up ring gears

I have a driver that uses the jake break in low gears, around the yard, on the streets etc. This same driver has tore out several ring gears over the past 6-8 months. The local Peterbilt dealer informed me that the way this driver is using the jake is tearing up ring gears. Is this dealer correct? Can the incorrect use of the jake cause ring gear failure? |

shgarrison, It is very possible! he would have to be relly revving the engine the letting the jake brake kick in. More ring gears and pinions are lost by dumping the clutch though. Both of thse usually end up up with breaking a tooth off the ring gear or pinion. Before you totally blame the driver, it could have been a bad set up on them. If its happened several times, it very well could be the driver. The problem is it could be one or the other. I'd put him in another truck I knew had good rears and if it happens again it is him. If it happens when someone lse is driving it, it is the shop.

Have the shop DISCONNECT the Jake Brake and see what happens.
