Starting a Dump Truck Company in Georgia
Posted: Tue Mar 7, 2006 6:10:37 PM

I currently drive a Tandem for a good company with a long history. Im looking into starting my own company since the Metro-Atlanta area is growing like you wouldn't believe. I know pretty much all there is to know about tandems as far as maintenance, fuel consumption, prices, etc etc. I would like to have 10 or more trucks one day.The problem is I'm only 21 and don't know where to start. Should I start with 1 truck and drive it myself or try to get as many trucks as possible and hire drivers? I dont know if i could get financing on 1 or more trucks or what the best truck financing companies are. The owner of my company says there is no money in dump trucking but I've met othere owners running 40 trucks and are very well off. I figure owners are going to say that because they don't want extra competiton. Sorry if I'm overwhelming you with questons but any hel would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Wade.

Hey Wade,

I feel your pain brother, i'm in north florida having the same idea as you are. and its true, most companies around here will tell it's not worth the money or the time invested .......but there is a reason that there are so many out there.

i'm 32 now, shop manager of a large otr fleet, i spent 10 years in the shop and the last 2 as shop manager. a very loyal company man. but i believe , as you do, there is oportunity out there for a motivated person to make it happen for themselves, to stop maintaining someone else's trucks and make a name for yourself.

i hope you the best of luck, and maybe Jake can answer your questions for both of us.

well wade, all i can tell you is, i was an owner/operator for a few years (7). and the honest truth about trying to get into the dump trade is (1) find a good company that has been in the business for at least 15 yrs. that pays out quicker than a 4 week hold back. (2) run only one truck for at least 3 years, by then, you should know the ins/outs of the trade. (3) do not........do not lease a trailor from the company, buy your own. this way, if you have any problems with the company, you can just leave and start elsewhere.(4) make sure you get a steel dump trailor, that way you can work year round in the constuction trade(more work, less damage to your equipment). (5) go to the raod construction companyies in your area, dont try to lease on with a company that works WITH them. go straight to the MAN.

it is a very hard job (lots and lots of hours),and when the weather is good, bust your ass. because it only takes one good rain day to screw you all week. when the work is there, take it. i used to pull 3- 12hr shifts up here in chicago, then pass out for 12. so work...work .....work.     just watch what you are doing when it comes time to dump the load. they do tend to flip once in awhile.

Hi Wade, If you have decided to start running your own truck I'd be happy to talk to you about financing it. Depending on your credit history I may be able to get you into a truck for very little down. Thanks, Tim Lawless unionwide@gmail.com

Guys, I need help in Houston, Tx. Thinking to start own company. I 've got questions. 1. Is a "woman-owned company" loan real? 2. Is there any type of loan for a refugee/ foreigner? 3. Let's say, you have got loan - truck(s). What do you need to do to get job? Do you sign contract(S); you register and construction companies call you?  How does that part work? Thank you very much.

Howdy, I currently work for the railroad in atlanta and I'm thinking of looking into starting a dump truck business.  I know that there has to be money in it or there wouldn't be any trucking companies around.  I'm used to long 12 hour shifts with 6 hrs of rest between them.  I don't have a CDL or a truck.  I like the advice given to wade and rodney and have a few more questions.  (1) should I just hold off and get my CDL and work for a company to learn the business or should I just do a lot of research and go from there?  (2) How hard is it to get a business license and how hard is it to get financing for a small business.  (3) How often do large companies contract this kinda work out to independents?  (4)  I was thinking of buying an older used truck and financing that or should I get a new one?  Like I said I dont know much about this business or starting one period so if you could point me in the right direction I'd be really pleased.  Also good luck to Wade and the others I'd like to hear how its going.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Rodney and Mike,

I can provide dump truck financing to someone just starting out in business. They need decent credit or the help of a co-signer. Simple, one page application. No financials required. Funding decision in 24 hours. Thanks, Tim Lawless

I have a 2006 Kenworth T800 dump truck I would like to sell. If you know anyone interested I will give them a good deal on it. I bought it for $125000 and owe $108000. If you know anyone looking please have them make me an offer and I will see what I can do.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Mate,

I just went through your post and I feel i can heal some of your wounds here.

We are a commercial truck financing company specializing in working with people with bad credit or who are unable to obtain traditional financing. We finance used commercial trucks and other used heavy duty trucks. You can find trucks for sale through a dealer, Truck Paper, or a private party, where ever you can strike the best deal.

But you have to get in touch with me so that I can handle your situation from my end.
