I hauled a load for a guy and am having a hard time getting paid, what can I do

I need more detail to provide you the correct advice. If the guy is an individual, you will have to take him to small claims court. If the guy is a broker,trucking co. or agent. You need to report the company to the D.O.T and also start the small claims court process. We have an article on small claims in our SHOP TALK section under legal on the site you might want to read.

PS: You will need to have all the paperwork required to transport a load on hand or copies, or getting paid could be very difficult.
