New to hotshot car hauling, need some info please!!
Posted: Thu Jan 5, 2012 2:30:31 PM

Hi All,

I'm new to hotshot car hauling based out of California. I bought a 2001 Ford F250 CrewCab V10 with 5th wheel  and a 4 car trailer.
Just wondering what would you advice to the newbie here. I have about 1 year of experience driving commercial trucks.

I'm currently looking to quit my stable job and start my own business of car hauling. Do you think there is still space for newcomers to join the force and make about 4-5K a month after all expenses? Also, where can i find consistent loads around California, Nevada and Oregon.

I sugest you keep your job. You will not make that in small time car huling. I have been in this for two years now. If I wasn't retired I could not do it either.

Here's some real world numbers for you. Here are my last two runs...

Dallas, TX - Columbus, MS - Birmingham, AL - Huntsville, AL - Dallas, TX
Dallas, TX - Victoria, TX - Corpus Christi, TX - Houston, TX - Baton Rouge, LA - New Orleans, LA - Dallas, TX

These two runs were over 8 days and I grossed about $4600, that's GROSS. You'll need to cut that pretty much in half after expenses. Oh, that's with a 3 car hauler. My rig is a RAM 3500 with a 43' Kaufman tri-axle trailer with 3' flippers added in the after market. My monthly gross is $10k - $13k. I'm driving 25 days a month averaging around 9k/month.

Can you make that kind of money, yes, but I do have some reservations about your truck. I'm not too sure if you're 2500 SWR will be able to deal with the weights you'll have to tote around.

Hope this helps.
