i am trying to let all you hotshot drivers out there know what the actual federal length laws are. as you know trying to understand the regs book can be confusing and then you get diffferent answers to just how long your truck and trailer can be. well here is the results of my 3 day quest for answers, a pickup-trailer combo can only be 65 feet long total. mow, if you have a big dually and a 3 car, 53 foot trailer, you will be at least 69 feet long. the states only allow 65 feet, federal does too. this is because you have a pickup box than can also haul anything. if you take the box off, put on fenders, this is to protect your load, tailights, put your 5th wheel hitch directly onto the frame of the truck, you are now considered a tractor and can be any length, just like the semi tractors. i asked the federal highway dot out of washington, talked to ooida, and several state dot officers on this matter, and no one is going to tell you that you are to long or how to fix this. the fines for overlength are enormous, in some states it is $500.00 per foot over 65 ft. i just thought someone should get the word out there for those that want or need to know. i know one ticket could destroy our business, in just one state stop! thanks for listening hope it helps some out. |
