For the most part those days came to an end when people started hiring just anyone right out of a driving school. Use to be you had to know someone to get a driving job or companies wouldn't even look at you. And if you wanted to become a Owner Operator you had to have someone that would put it in writing they had loads for you. There's still small groups that operate with the same principles. We're one of those groups. We are 100% Independent Owner Operators and when one of us has a problem we all try to help. Here's a for instance,Recently one of our guys broke down in Amarillo, The next morning we had two trucks there to assist. We rolled clear from Southern California to Amarillo overnight to grab the loaded trailer and we had another truck roll out of Wy overnight to load his truck on. We even had one Owner Operator clear up in Sacramento that had just gotten home after being out for 2 month offer to drive to Amarillo at no charge to help. We brought this Owner Operator all the way to Southern California and never charged him a dime. This Independent Owner Operator just like any other would have likely went under over this break down if it wasn't for being apart of our group. I miss those days your talking about, I remember just pulling off the highway to check a tire and you'd have several Drivers asking if you needed help. With high fuel and times the way they are the only Independents that'll probably survive is these small groups that stick together. Just because you don't see nayone stopping to lend a hand doesn't mean you should stop offering help. Who knows maybe it'll catch on again. |
