Becoming a Freight Broker

Dear Jake Brake, I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to get started with becoming a freight broker. If you could e-mail me at thomashauling@sbcglobal.net. Thank you -- David

David,
Alot of people want to become freight brokers because they think its an easy job. I can tell you its not! You need a base of contacts or need to know a large amount of trucking companies for contacts. You also need to have you own customers that will provide you with freight. You freight usually will have to pay higher than average line haul. With that being said. The first thing you need to do is make sure you have both of the things I mentioned above. Then all you need to do is go to the web site www.dot.gov and request or print out the freight brokerage forms, apply, comply, submit payment and in 90-120 days you will have your brokers licence. Then all you have to do is move the freight! good luck!

Freight Broker Training is recommended before you try to start operating. You should seek out a program that covers finding shippers and trucks, freight rate development, contract negotiations and sales and marketing. The least expensive program and we believe best value is DOTAuthority.com's one-day seminar called 'Intro to Freight Brokering' offered in 25 cities across the USA. Cost is $500 and includes 2 books and lunch. Call 888 414 1874 and ask for Melissa or Phil or visit www.dotauthority.com.

You can secure motor carrier authority through www.dotauthority.com. You might also consider attending a two day Trucking Success Workshop for new carriers which covers finding shippers, freight rate development, contract negotiations with shippers and brokers and sales and marketing.
