Becoming a broker or agent
Posted: Sat Jan 20, 2007 2:09:15 AM

I own a trucking company, and have my own authority we move container freight in and out of the ports of VA,  but I have some steamship lines that are giving me more freight then I can move, so I want to be able to give my over flow to other trucking companies, my question is do I need to become a broker or agent , someone was telling me I would need to take a test, I thought you apply for a license, and would I have to apply for authority also, Please give me some insight on this subject, I think I losing alot of money by turning this over flow away.

Thank for you help

Where do you go to get a license? Is it a federal jurisdiction or state?

Hi
I am a broker.  I got all my paperwork done thru getloaded.com.  Cost 685.00
Cost to Federals for LLC  100.00
Surety Bond  for 10,000  done thru Pacific Assoctation
It takes them a while to get all of that done but they deal with boc and activating MC #

There is more than one way to start brokering.  Neither requires you to pass any sort of test or attend any sort of "broker school".  The first way is to get your own broker authority and bond and any lisense that your local government requires ie. occupational.  This could work well for you as long as your just doing it to handle the overflow that you're already hauling for.  The other way to start brokering is to partner up with an existing brokerage using thier authority and bond.  They usually keep a percentage but do your billing and pay your carriers.  There are pros and cons of each depending on what you want to accomplish.
