You arent getting answers because the people youre asking arent sure either. Its a gray area, and there are brokers out there who want to keep it gray. Because if you knew everything involved, you wouldnt do it.....The best way to make a living with a one ton truck is to go out and buy a trailer. Its going to be very difficult to make a good living on RVs and horse trailers alone. 95% of all the hotshot freight out there requires a trailer. And the 5% that doesnt is flooded with new people who think theyre going to make it big. The RV and horse trailer companies know this and will overwork and underpay you, because they know theres another newbie in line right behind you. All my employees are X-RV/horse trailer haulers, who finally stopped working their asses off and realized they werent making any money.Lets do a little math: Lets say you sign up with company A, and they are going to pay you 1.00 a mile to haul a new RV from Indiana to Florida. We'll say its 1000 miles just to make it even. So heres a great load $1000. Lets asume you live 100 miles from the trailer manufacturer. And your Dodge dually is getting 18 miles to the gallon empty.To go get the trailer it will cost you about $10Now youre loaded getting 15 mpg. So it will cost about $150 to get to florida.It will take two days to get to florida, so you will have to break your insurance payments down. Full coverage trucking insurance with 1 million liability, and 100,000 cargo will cost you about 10,000 per year + the down payment and financing, or roughly $250 dollars per week. Or about $35 a day for this scenario. So two days to Florida will cost you $70.Add food, oil, expenses say another $40 minimum.So far the trip to Florida has cost you $270 dollars. Now you have to return to somewhere. And this is where it all falls apart. You wont get anything out of Florida. Even if you have a list of all the trailer manufacturers in Florida or any state for that matter. The chances that a single unit fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer going back to Indiana on the day you want it, are slim to none. At least 75% of all trailer haulers go home EMPTY. Even the ones working for the big trailer hauling brokers. So you race back to indiana to get another trailer thats another $120 fuel and $70 insurance AND expenses $40. or $230230+270= $500 for 5 days on the road. And Im being generous. Ask any hotshot on these boards, and they will tell you the same thing.I know some of you are going to try and correct me on some of these numbers. Some of you will get 1.50 a mile some will get .82 cents. Some will get a back haul and some wont. But the basic Idea here is THIS....RV and Horse trailers are the simplest way to get into hotshot trucking. Because of this, there is a surplus of people with dually trucks doing the exact same thing you are. But a wedge or a 36 foot flatbed and stay loaded all the time for at least .75 cents a mile. Get a good company and work under their numbers for a while until you get some experience.Everything about trucking looks good on paper, but is ultimately ruled by Murphy's law. Ask any owner/operator on this board.
